Notation No. 16: Black Field Registration Marks

There's barely anything here, and it's all deliberate. A dark, textured black ground — slightly uneven, with a chalky, pulled-print quality at the edges where the ink didn't fully cover — contains a single thin white rectangle set in from the borders. Inside that rectangle: a plus sign at upper left, another at upper right, an x between them, another x at lower left, another at lower right, and a short horizontal dash at mid-left. That's it. Five or six marks and a border on an otherwise empty surface. They're the kind of marks you'd find on a print registration sheet or a film negative — functional symbols that were never supposed to be the subject. Part of The Notation Studies, where each piece starts with a field and builds marks into it. This one builds the fewest marks of nearly any piece in the collection — it makes No. 10 (Black Staff Lines) look busy. The tension is between the vast empty field and the few small marks trying to organize it. It's a piece that either clicks immediately or doesn't, and that's fine. The rough edges and imperfect ink coverage keep it from feeling sterile. A black frame dissolves the boundary; a white frame turns it into an object.
