Notation No. 14: Dark Linen Weave

From more than a few feet away this reads as a dark, slightly silvered rectangle — a simple tonal piece that doesn't demand attention. Up close it reveals itself as thousands of fine white lines running horizontally and vertically across a deep blue-black ground, so dense and so fine they create a woven texture rather than a visible grid. The line spacing isn't perfectly uniform; it tightens and loosens subtly across the surface, creating areas of slightly different density that shimmer when the light shifts. A darker border — about an inch on each side — frames the crosshatched center, where the lines either stop short or the ground darkens enough to swallow them. It gives the piece a built-in mat effect. Part of The Notation Studies, where each piece starts with a field and builds marks into it. This one takes the concept to its most obsessive conclusion — the marks are so numerous and so fine they almost cancel themselves out and return to a flat surface. It's the most textile-like piece in the collection, closer to a swatch of handwoven fabric than a drawing. The color is deceptive too — it reads black in low light but reveals a cool blue-green undertone in brighter conditions. A black frame lets it recede; a dark wood frame brings out the warmth underneath.
