Notation No. 11: Terracotta Open Grid

This piece does the least and says the most about what the collection is after. A flat terracotta field — matte, slightly textured at the edges where the ink thins out — and maybe fifteen white lines laid across it. Some are horizontal, some vertical, a few cut diagonal. They cluster in pairs in some areas and run solo in others, creating an irregular grid that divides the surface into rectangles of different sizes. None of the intersections are perfect. The lines waver just enough to register as drawn rather than ruled. The result is architectural without being rigid — it reads like a floor plan, a window mullion, or an aerial view of irrigated plots, depending on how long you look. Part of The Notation Studies, a collection of pattern-based work built on color fields and incised detail. This is one of the most open and least busy entries in the set. The terracotta ground does most of the work, and the lines just organize it. The raw, brushed edge where the field meets the paper gives it a printmaker quality. A natural wood frame warms it further; a black frame sharpens it into something more graphic.
