Notation No. 10: Black Staff Lines

There's almost nothing here, and that's the point. Roughly sixteen white lines run horizontally across a square black field. They're grouped in pairs — two lines close together, a gap, two more — and the spacing between pairs narrows as you move down the composition, creating a subtle compression that your eye registers as rhythm or acceleration even if you don't consciously notice it. The black ground isn't perfectly flat; it has a faint chalky texture with micro-scratches and dust-like marks that keep it from feeling digital. It reads like a chalkboard that was cleaned but not wiped blank. The lines themselves are crisp and mechanical against that imperfect surface. Part of The Notation Studies, where each piece starts with a field and builds marks into it. This one builds the fewest marks of any piece in the set — it's the most reductive entry, the one that trusts negative space to do the work. It reads like a musical staff waiting for notes, or a ruled page before the writing starts. Strong as a standalone piece in a tight space, or as a quiet anchor in a larger grouping where everything else is busier.
