Notation No. 09: Olive Hash Mark Field

Every mark here is roughly the same length — a short white stroke — but they're grouped in small bundles of three to five lines, each bundle rotated to a different angle. The bundles tile across the olive ground without repeating, creating an allover pattern that has no center and no obvious orientation. You could hang it any direction and it would work. The density varies slightly — tighter toward the middle, loosening at the edges where the green field breathes through — and the marks themselves have a dry, chalky quality that suggests a woodcut or a stiff brush on rough paper. Part of The Notation Studies, a collection of pattern-based work built on flat color fields and incised detail. This one sits in its own lane within the set — it's the most organic and least geometric, closer to something observed in nature than something plotted on a chart. The olive ground is unusual in the collection and gives it strong pairing potential with warmer rust and coral pieces or cooler black-and-white work. It's a connector piece for gallery walls.
