Notation No. 07: Gold Field & Star Scatter

The gold ground here has real material quality — dusty, slightly granular, with tonal shifts that read like oxidized metal or aged leaf. The upper half is dense with small white asterisk marks, each one a few quick lines crossing at a center point. They cluster and thin out as they move downward, eventually giving way to a lower zone of long, fine horizontal scratches that run edge to edge like wire or scored metal. The transition between the two zones isn't a hard line — the stars taper off and the lines fade in — which creates something that reads almost like a landscape without ever committing to one. Part of The Notation Studies, a collection of pattern-based work built on color fields and incised detail. This piece is one of the warmer, more atmospheric entries in the set. The gold reads richer in person than on screen — it has the quality of something gilded and then weathered. A natural wood frame picks up the warmth without competing; a black frame would sharpen the contrast considerably.
