Notation No. 06: Black Grid & Slash

There are two systems at work here and they don't agree with each other. The first is a fine white grid — horizontal and vertical lines on a black ground — that appears in irregular patches across the surface. It's not continuous; it shows up in dense clusters and then drops out entirely, leaving stretches of pure black. The second system is a set of long diagonal lines that cut across the grid at sharp angles, like someone drew over the top of a finished drawing with a straightedge. They read like strike-throughs, or measurement lines on a technical diagram, or the kind of marks an editor leaves on a manuscript. Together the two layers create a push and pull between order and interruption. Part of The Notation Studies, where each piece starts with a surface and builds marks into it. This one has more tension than most in the collection — the grid wants to organize and the slashes want to override. It's busier than it looks in a thumbnail, which makes it reward closer viewing. The black field gives it presence on a wall without needing a dark frame to contain it.
