Notation No. 03: White Dash Grid on Black

Every mark here is roughly the same size — a short white rectangle — but none of them sit the same way. Some lean left, some stand vertical, some go flat. They're organized in rows and columns that almost hold together but keep drifting out of registration, like a woven textile where the tension isn't quite even. The overall shape floats as a rough square centered on the black ground, with the edges dissolving where the marks thin out. Up close it's restless. From across a room it reads as a single textured block. Part of The Notation Studies — a collection of pattern-based work built on color fields and incised detail. This piece is one of the more physical entries: it has the quality of a stamp or a block print, something made by pressing and repeating a single gesture until the surface fills up. Strong enough to stand alone on a wall, or use it to ground a gallery grouping that includes warmer, more colorful pieces.
