Serpentine

The faceted planes in shifting greens — forest, emerald, lime, teal — map directly to serpentine, California's state rock. Found throughout the Coast Ranges from the Marin Headlands south, serpentine fractures along angular planes and ranges from deep blue-green to bright chartreuse depending on mineral content and weathering. The dark lines running through the composition are the fracture networks that define the stone's character, the seams where one plane of mineral meets the next. A patch of teal-blue at the lower right suggests the copper and magnesium content that gives some serpentine deposits their distinctive blue-green shift. The vertical form reads almost figurative — a column or standing stone — which is how serpentine often appears in the landscape: upright outcrops pushing through grassland on exposed hillsides.
