Packing House

Before Napa Valley was wine country it was orchard country — prunes, Bartlett pears, walnuts, and cherries packed into wooden crates and shipped from corrugated packing sheds that still stand at the edges of properties throughout the valley, half-swallowed by vines. Step inside one and this is what you see: rough-cut boards overlapping at every angle, gaps between planks letting in columns of light, the accumulated geometry of a structure built for function over a century and never quite finished or quite falling down. Packing House renders that interior as abstract form — warm brown and tan planes layered against each other, a luminous cream field at the center where the light comes through, small anchors of dark burgundy and raw ochre marking the corners like old nails and knot marks. It's the warmest, most grounded piece in this batch, and one of the most versatile — neutral enough to live anywhere, specific enough to reward attention.
