Night Signal

The composition is almost entirely black, interrupted only by a cream sky band at top and a single red circle sitting inside a curved form like a light in a harbor. This is the Northern California coast at night — the working coast, not the scenic overlook. Bodega Bay, Point Reyes, Tomales Bay, the stretches where channel markers and navigation lights are the only color against dark water and darker headlands. The curved white line suggests a breakwater or the hull of a vessel seen from above, and the red dot is a port-side marker or harbor signal — the kind of small, steady light that tells you where you are when everything else has gone dark. The piece works because of how much it withholds. Almost nothing is shown, which is exactly what the coast looks like after sunset when the landscape reduces to silhouette and signal.
