Figure Studies No. 05: Blue Fragment

This is the most architectural figure in the collection. The body is built from flat, angular planes — broad shoulders tapering to a sharp waist, then widening again at the hip — with no attempt at organic curves or soft transitions. It reads less like a person and more like a figure carved from a single block and lit from within. The fine crosshatch texture across every surface gives it a density and materiality that keeps it from feeling slick, almost like looking at woven fabric or finely scored metal under strong light. The crop is deliberate: no head, no feet, no identity. Just a torso as form. The blue ranges from deep navy in the shadows to an almost neon cyan where the planes catch light, and the background splits between indigo and true black, pushing the figure forward. It's the kind of saturated blue that doesn't exist in nature except in deep shade — the color under a bridge at noon, or the inside of a wave before it breaks along the Marin headlands.
