Colusa at Noon

Drive Highway 99 through the Sacramento Valley in August — through Colusa County, past the grain elevators and rice dryers and water towers standing in flat fields that run to the horizon — and at noon the heat does things to what you see. Structures become silhouettes. Silhouettes become presences. The light goes ochre and the shadows go wrong, pooling in directions that don't match the sun, and sometimes something at the edge of the road is exactly what it appears to be and sometimes it isn't. Colusa at Noon lives in that gap. The golden field is stippled like dried grass seen from altitude, alive with texture. The mauve form — domed, architectural, outlined in a thin red line that glows like heated metal or a warning marker — sits in it like something that arrived rather than something that was built. The grey mass at its base is the shadow, except shadows at noon shouldn't be this large, this dark, this certain. An unexpected abstract print for spaces that can hold complexity — the piece that looks different every time you come back to it, depending on what the light is doing and what you're willing to see.
