Field Notes

Northern California burns. Not metaphorically — literally, seasonally, intentionally. Controlled burns have shaped this landscape for thousands of years, clearing oak woodland and chaparral, returning the land to something essential. What's left behind is what these pieces are made from: the char pattern on weathered wood, the way fire reveals grain and texture rather than destroying it, the dark mass of a form that held against the heat and the warm striated ground that didn't quite surrender either.
Burn Marks I is the aftermath — a form that dominated the frame and stayed. Burn Marks II is the event itself, that same dark mass caught leaning, the notched silhouette suggesting a chimney stack or a tree line or something structural that fire found and changed. They're not identical. They're not supposed to be. The conversation between them — stillness against motion, mass against edge — is the point.
