Field Notes

After a fire moves through Northern California hillside — after the prescribed burn does its work or the season takes what it takes — what's left on the ground looks like this. Lengths of charred timber scattered at every angle, each one still showing the grain of what it was, blackened surfaces split by white where the wood caught and released. Char Study is a field document of that aftermath: twenty-odd forms tumbled across cream, each bearing the internal texture of burned wood, rendered with the directness of a woodblock print. The deckled edge grounds it further — this reads as a study, a notation, something recorded close to the ground before the rains came and the chaparral came back. An oversized horizontal black and white abstract print ideal for dining rooms, above low credenzas, or any long horizontal wall that needs graphic weight without color commitment.
