Part of Merritt Lane's Perfect Pairs series — two pieces designed together, meant to hang together. Burn Marks I draws from Northern California's fire ecology: the controlled burns, the char patterns left on manzanita and oak after a season's burn, the way scorched ground reveals texture beneath. That warm striated ground isn't decorative — it's a reading of weathered material, the kind of surface you find on old-growth bark, on split-rail fences, on the worked land of the Northern California interior. The black form holds its ground. Massive, slightly irregular, carved at the edges where the fire didn't take. Bold black abstract art for people who want one thing on the wall that says everything.
